Update on Lehna

For those of you who don’t know this is to kind of be information on Lehna. On Friday night Tait and I had just arrived in Peru when absolute terror struck our family. Tait dropped me off at the hair salon and he took Lehna and Maya to Grandma & Grandpa’s house. Well after 30 minutes of me talking with Kelly and us discussing what’s new in each other’s life and hair color and all of that girl stuff I get a call from a neighbor stating that I had an emergency phone call. Thinking that was a little strange I picked up the phone and a girl on the phone asked if this was Stephanie and said that they were taking Lehna to the hospital and that it was an emergency. I was like “what” in my mind I was thinking “oh my gosh Tait was in a car accident and they are taking Lehna for precautionary measures.” Well I starting asking “what happened” and the girl said “I don’t know what happened all I know is they were giving her CPR and they were putting her in the ambulance” My mind totally flipped out. I was like CPR that means she’s not breathing what the hell happened… what is going on. Well the girl didn’t know any other information. She just said to get to the hospital. I looked at Kelly and I said Kelly I can’t go like this you have to get this stuff out of my hair. I repeated the information to Kelly what I just heard and she was like asking me questions and I didn’t know I didn’t know what was happening… and then panic started to take over. In my head I was thinking that there wouldn’t have been enough time for them to have been swimming I mean they would have had to have gotten her dressed and then put in the pool and there just was no time for that they had just gotten there 20 mins ago. So I was begging Kelly to hurry and she kept telling me that she was and she said, “say a prayer” so I did and I just was panicking… I didn’t know anything about my little girl besides she was n the way to the hospital and she wasn’t breathing.

Kelly had to take me to the hospital b/c I didn’t have a car since Tait just dropped me off and she said she would stay with me until someone came. When we got to the hospital I started pounding the glass on the windows giving them my name and asking where was Lehna. And the girl said ‘I don’t know but I’ll find out’ and she started to make calls. She said that the ambulance was on its way. I had beaten the ambulance. Well I kept saying “I need to call someone I need to find out what happened” So I look frantically in my purse for my phone and I couldn’t find it… so I told the lady that I needed to make a phone call and she handed me the phone and it didn’t work so I threw the phone back saying this phone isn’t work it’s just beeping… and the lady tried again and this time it worked and Tanna answered. I asked Tanna what was happening and she said she didn’t know and I was like Tell me what happened.

Tanna Said that Lehna was outside and she was playing and all of a sudden she said she was hot and so they said okay and she was walking in front of Tanna and they walked into the kitchen and she just fell down and Tanna kind of took a double take and noticed that Lehna didn’t try to catch herself she just fell. Well Tanna and Tait were around her and Tait said was just lying there and then she started to shake. Helen said her arms her legs everything was shaking and her eyes were rolling back into her head. So they dialed 911 actually all 4 of them were calling 911. Tait said he noticed that her chest wasn’t raising and falling and so he cleared her tongue and started giving her breaths and chest compressions. Trent in the meantime ran across the street to their neighbor’s house for Kayla. Kayla was recently certified in CPR. Helen also ran down the street to get another neighbor who was a nurse. Kayla came in and took over with CPR and the nurse shortly followed. Tait said by the time the nurse came that Lehna was breathing on her own but it was very shallow breaths and she just asked totally out of it and really tired.

In the meantime Sam, Tanna’s boyfriend, who is a Peru cop, was on his way in. He said he was right behind the ambulance and he said he wanted to run over the ambulance b/c they were going slow but they were looking for the house number. When the EMT’s got there they basically put her on a board and put her in a neck brace and took her out of the house. Sam then got on his phone and started making calls. He called the Peru cops to tell them they were on their way and he had arranged it so they got through town with no problem b/c they had blocked the streets. Tait said that once the got into the ambulance they sat there for awhile trying to get her stabilized. Then they were off.

When the finally arrived I had found out from Tanna that Lehna was crying and breathing on her own so I was really excited to hear her cry when she got to the hospital. The nurse came out and said that she’s here she’s crying but I needed to really control myself b/c I needed to help calm her down and if I was upset then Lehna would be upset. So I told her I would calm down. I went back into the room and I ran over to her and told her I was here. Lehna was in such a state of panic she was reaching for anyone near her the nurse anyone to hold her but she still was stabilized on the board and didn’t let her up. Well finally the doctor came in and did the initial check and was asking me questions that I didn’t have answers to b/c I wasn’t there and then Tait came into the room and he answered all the questions. The concern was her fall if she had hit her head when she fell or anything like that. After it was established that she didn’t just fall down that she had had a seizure.

While we were there they took her immediately back to CAT scan. This was the strangest part. Lehna was so upset and panicky that the nurses said that they were going to need more nurses to help constrain her in the scanner. Well they put the Lead mat down and wrapped Lehna in these warm blankets Lehna literally fell right to sleep. This of course had me nervous b/c I didn’t want the baby to sleep b/c I knew if she as crying she was at least alive. Well the nurse said this is fine she’s breathing she had her hand on her chest so she could feel that her chest was raising and falling and I kept my eyes strapped to her chest to ensure that she was okay. After the scan they moved Lehna back the gurney and she then started to cry again. She was such a brave little girl I mean she really had someone whispering in her ear to calm down b/c that couldn’t have been down by anything by me b/c she was so out of it she was so scary. Well they moved her back into the room and they came in and had to do a catheter to do a pee test and that was bad but it wasn’t as bad when they had to change her IV. Her catheter chinked so they had to restick her and since Lehna has such little round arms they struggled finding a vein, it was so awful to watch her cry and scream when we couldn’t do anything about it.

The doctor finally came back with good news. Her CAT scan came back completely normal she didn’t have brain damage or anything like that. All of her tests came back normal nothing out of the order like blood sugar or infection. The only thing that was a little concerning was her liver enzymes were raised. The doctor explained that it could have been from a Tylenol overdose. Tait and I both looked at each other and said she didn’t have any when she was with us and usually at daycare they call and ask if she has a fever. And they didn’t say anything about her acting out of the norm for her or having to give her Tylenol. One theory was that maybe another child at daycare had pills on them and maybe she picked them up and ate them. Well I had talked to the daycare director to see if anything out of the norm happened on Friday and she said that Lehna had a great day there was no Tylenol given or anything like that. Debbie (daycare director) said she would talk to the girls on Monday just to make sure that everything was normal and did they notice anything.

Well after 4 ½ hours they decided that Lehna did have a seizure they said that it looked like it was a fembrous fever (I think that’s the right word) which means a seizure brought on by a high fever. Which of course was total news to Tait and I b/c we didn’t even know she had a fever? The doctor told us to watch her this weekend. Keep her out of the heat totally; keep her in a diaper and tee shirt, rotated Motrin and Tylenol every 4-6 hours and to keep tabs on her temp. If she starts to have any problems like her fever won’t go down or another seizure to bring her back immediately but we were to see out doctor on Monday for further testing. They said they want to do an EKG on her to see if they can find out exactly what caused the seizure.

All weekend all of us watched her like a hawk she didn’t leave the room more then 10 seconds without one of the adults checking on her. I checked her temp OFTEN (thank goodness Lehna likes to check her temp) and we kept giving her Motrin or Tylenol.

On Friday night at 3 Am. Lehna woke up throwing up. It was awful she was so upset it was in her hair and on the blankets and pillows just everywhere. So we gave her a bath. We checked her temp when she first woke up and it was 100.3. After her bath it was like 30 minutes I checked her again and it was then at 101.3 I was like “oh my gosh here we go” and I called doctor Patel. I feel bad now calling but it was for a good reason. Doctor Patel said to continue to watch her and monitor her and give her Tylenol she said that there is a stomach virus going around that is spiking children’s fevers really high and that maybe what is causing her high fever and what caused the seizure. She said to get her to drink as much as possible and to eat if she’s willing. Well by the time we work up the next morning Lehna’s temp was 98.1 her fever broke, by the end of the day she was at a 97.7 average. I was so thankful. Lehna acted liked herself the rest of thew weekend was fine playing and laughing and enjoying the extra attention. We are still keeping tabs on her temp and giving her medicine to help keep a fever away. I will go to the doctor first thing tomorrow morning to see what the next step is.

That was probably one of scariest things I have ever had to experience. Kelly had called the church and arranged for two priesthood holders to come and give Lehna a blessing. I can’t describe the relief that I felt once Lehna had her blessing. I knew moments after the blessing that Lehna was going to be fine I actually felt the release after the blessing. I can’t say that I have ever felt that kind of relief before. It was so scary and I am so thankful for all the family members and friends that were with us that evening. You really showed your care and support and Tait and I will be forever grateful. We owe a lot of our thanks to Kayla how administered CPR to her and thank her to help save our baby girl. For those of you that couldn’t make it on Friday thank you for your support of calls and prayers we felt everyone’s love and support so thank you.

I will keep all of you as updated as I can. Right now to look at Lehna you would have never have known that she had a seizure not more then 48 hours ago she is acting totally normal. I hope that tomorrow we will have some answers to our questions but the reality of it is we may never know why this happened but I hope in some sense we won’t ever have to experience this event again. It was so horrible and I know that there were enough angels that were watching us that night that helped save our little girl.
